Description
"The Text is Dance, and the Dance is Narrative": A Conversation with Cheryl A. Wilson On September 24, 2009, I had the opportunity to sit down with Cheryl A. Wilson, Assistant Professor of English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, to discuss her recent book Literature and Dance in NineteenthCentury_ Britain: Jane Austen to the New Woman. After reading her text for the book review that appears in this issue, I was struck by how little I knew about the role of dance in nineteenth-century British literature prior to reading her book. I knew the basics, of course, and who can forget the lavish dance scenes in period films? But, as Cheryl Wilson will explain, there is more to the dance than just the dance. Nineteenth-century readers and writers would have been aware of the relationship between dance and literature. Now, Cheryl Wilson is making contemporary readers and scholars aware of that relationship. The following conversation explores not only the genesis of the work but also touches on elements of the text itself and the topic's place in nineteenth-century scholarship.
